Why Pre-Wedding Events Are as Important as the Wedding Itself
In Telugu culture, a wedding is never just a single day. It is a multi-day celebration — a series of beautifully ordered rituals that prepare the bride and groom spiritually, emotionally, and socially for married life. Each pre-wedding event has deep meaning rooted in Hindu tradition, and understanding them helps both families participate fully and meaningfully.
According to the detailed Wikipedia article on Hindu weddings, these pre-wedding ceremonies are described in ancient texts including the Grihyasutras and are considered essential to a valid Vivaha (marriage) under Vedic tradition. The specific ceremonies vary by region, and East Godavari Telugu weddings have their own beautiful variations.
At Ayyappa Tent House, we decorate all pre-wedding events across Kakinada, Rajahmundry, and all of East Godavari. Here is our complete guide to every event that happens before the main wedding day.
Complete Order of Telugu Pre-Wedding Events
Telugu weddings typically follow this sequence. The timeline and exact ceremonies vary by family tradition, caste, and region — but this is the most common order observed across East Godavari district:
1. Nischitartham — The Engagement / Betrothal
When: Weeks to months before the wedding, on an auspicious muhurtham date chosen by the family priest.
What happens: The Nischitartham (literally "fixed purpose") is the formal betrothal ceremony. The bride and groom exchange rings in the presence of both families, a priest, and invited elders. The groom's family brings gifts (sarees, gold, fruits, coconuts) for the bride. The bride's family reciprocates. An exchange of tamboolam (betel leaves and nuts) between the families seals the agreement.
- Muhurtham (auspicious time) fixed by the purohit (priest)
- Exchange of rings between bride and groom
- Tamboolam exchange between families
- Gifts from groom's family: sarees, gold ornaments, sweets
- Formal announcement of wedding date
Decoration: Stage setup with flower garlands, marigold torans, a decorated mandap for the couple, and colourful rangoli. See our engagement decoration gallery →
2. Godhuma Pindi — Wheat Paste Invitation Ritual
When: 1–3 days before the wedding.
What happens: Godhuma Pindi (wheat paste) is a uniquely Telugu ritual where married women from the family and neighbourhood apply a paste made from wheat flour and turmeric to the door frames of the bride's and groom's homes. This act is accompanied by songs and is essentially the public announcement that a wedding is happening in this home.
- Married women apply wheat flour paste (godhuma pindi) to doorframes
- Turmeric and kumkum marks are added
- Women sing traditional Telugu wedding songs (Harikatha songs)
- Banana leaves and mango leaf torans are hung
3. Snathakam — Groom's Sacred Thread Ceremony
When: Morning of Pellikoduku day or one day before the wedding.
What happens: Snathakam is the ceremony in which the groom symbolically "graduates" from student life (brahmacharya) and prepares to enter householder life (grihastha). The groom bathes, wears new clothes, and receives a sacred thread. He performs symbolic actions like going on a Kashi Yatra (pilgrimage) — only to be stopped by the bride's father and persuaded to return and marry.
- Groom bathes and wears new white dhoti and uttariyam
- Sacred thread (pavitram) ritual performed by priest
- Kashi Yatra — groom pretends to go to Kashi; bride's father stops him
- Father persuades groom to return and marry his daughter
4. Pellikoduku & Pellikuturu — Haldi / Turmeric Ceremony
When: 1–3 days before the wedding, or the morning of the wedding day itself.
What happens: This is one of the most joyful and photographed pre-wedding events. Pellikoduku is the groom's ceremony; Pellikuturu is the bride's. In both:
- The bride/groom sits on a wooden plank (manavarala pitha) decorated with rangoli
- A mixture of turmeric paste, oil, and sometimes kumkum is prepared
- Female relatives and married women apply the turmeric (pasupu) to the bride/groom's face, arms, and feet, five times
- Coconut milk may be poured over the head — symbolising purification
- Women sing wedding songs throughout
- After the ritual, the bride/groom bathes in water blessed with neem leaves and turmeric
Decoration ideas for Pellikoduku/Pellikuturu: Yellow marigold backdrop, banana leaves, earthen lamps (diyas), fresh turmeric stalks, clay pots, and hand-painted wooden planks. For professional decoration ideas see our gallery →
5. Mehendi Night — Henna Application Ceremony
When: Evening before the wedding day.
What happens: Mehendi (henna) is applied to the bride's hands and feet in intricate patterns. This is typically a ladies-only or intimate family gathering in the evening, with music, dancing, and celebration. Professional mehendi artists are hired. The groom's name is traditionally hidden somewhere in the mehendi design — and it is considered auspicious if the groom can find it.
- Professional mehendi artist applies intricate bridal henna design
- Groom's name hidden within the design (Telugu tradition)
- Female relatives also get mehendi applied
- Music, songs, and celebrations throughout the evening
- Bridal mehendi colour is believed to be darker if the groom's love is stronger
6. Sangeet — Music & Dance Celebration
When: Evening before the wedding (often combined with Mehendi night in Telugu weddings).
What happens: Though originally a North Indian tradition, Sangeet nights have become popular in urban Telugu weddings in Kakinada and Rajahmundry. Both families gather for an evening of music and dance performances — family members perform choreographed dances, sometimes with professional dance groups.
- Choreographed dance performances by family members
- Live music or DJ
- Traditional Telugu folk songs and dances
- Sometimes a roast of the bride and groom
